University ‘freshers’ urged to have the Meningitis ACWY vaccine.

This week’s NHS Choices weekly report covers the period August 14-20 2017, which saw 9.90 million visits to the site. This was a 1.80% increase on the previous week and a 3.46% decrease compared with the same period last year. Unique visitors totalled 7.26 million.

Top 10 site area visits

Visits to Live Well saw the biggest increase this week, going up by 0.37%. The NHS in England saw the biggest fall, with a 0.09% decrease compared with last week.

Within Treatments and Conditions, there are a number of guides providing in-depth information on topics such as pregnancy and baby, contraception, vaccinations, stress, anxiety and depression, and care and support. Guides accounted for 9.74% of all site visits in week 33.


Meningitis ACWY vaccine: Reports that older teenagers and university students are being urged to have the Men ACWY vaccine before starting their studies, led to increased interest in the ‘Men ACWY’ page. The single vaccine protects against four different strains of the meningococcal bacteria that cause meningitis and blood poisoning (septicaemia): A, C, W and Y. Visits to the page saw a 506% increase to 38,896. There was a related rise in visits to meningitis pages, with the ‘Meningitis introduction’ page seeing a 44% increase in traffic to 16,031 visits, while the ‘symptoms’ page saw 11,304 visits – a 31% increase compared with the previous week.

Body mass index (BMI): A 206% increase in visits to the ‘What’s your BMI?’ page saw visits total 31,543. Visits were highest on August 15, accounting for 63% of the weekly total. More than 6,000 referrals to the page came from the BBC website. The ‘BMI healthy weight calculator’ page saw a rise in visits too, with a 10% uplift to 191,489 – making it the most visited page on NHS Choices during week 33.

Insomnia: The ‘Insomnia introduction’ page saw a 138% increase to reach 8,406 visits, as problems with getting to sleep or staying asleep for long enough to feel refreshed the next morning were of interest. The ‘Insomnia treatment’ page saw visits go up by 11% to 3,221, while the ‘causes’ page saw a 21% increase.

Top 10 search engine referral phrases: ‘Sciatica’ and ‘sepsis’ moved into the top 10 this week after ranking 11th and 14th respectively last week.

Couch to 5K: Visits to ‘Couch to 5K’ pages were popular, with the ‘Couch to 5K: week by week’ page seeing a 67% increase in traffic to 21,388, while the ‘Couch to 5K’ hub page saw visits go up by 9% to 12,233. Visits to the ‘Get running with Couch to 5K’ page rose by 15%. Other running related pages to see increased visits included: ‘How to run correctly’, ‘How to stretch after a run’ and ‘Knee pain and other running injuries’, which saw 7%, 2% and 7% increases respectively.

Top 10 videos: Video views, including those on the NHS Choices YouTube channel, totalled 130,726, an 11.03% increase compared with the previous week. The ‘Pilates’ video was top with 4,360 views.
